The Rise of Black-Owned Business in Mississippi

2 min readThe Mississippi Record

Supported by new networks and capital, Black entrepreneurs are building businesses across the state, though structural barriers remain.

Mississippi has one of the largest Black populations of any state, and a growing movement is working to ensure that population is better represented among its business owners. Supported by new networks, resources, and capital, Black entrepreneurs are building businesses across the state, even as structural barriers persist.

The growth spans sectors, from retail and food to professional services and technology. Behind much of it lies deliberate effort: organizations that provide mentorship, funds aimed at closing gaps in access to capital, and networks that connect entrepreneurs to one another and to opportunity.

The barriers these efforts confront are real and historically rooted. Access to capital has long been unequal, and Black-owned businesses have often struggled to secure the financing that fuels growth. Overcoming that legacy requires sustained work on both the supply of capital and the systems that allocate it.

The stakes reach beyond individual success. A more inclusive business economy means broader opportunity, stronger communities, and a fuller realization of the state's economic potential. The progress is real but incomplete, and the barriers have not vanished. But the rise of Black-owned business in Mississippi represents a meaningful shift, and a challenge to an economic order that long excluded too many from ownership.
