The Wild Barrier Islands Just Offshore

2 min readThe Mississippi Record

A short boat ride from the mainland, a chain of undeveloped islands offers pristine beaches and a glimpse of the coast as it once was.

Just offshore from the developed Mississippi coast lies a different world: a chain of barrier islands, largely undeveloped and protected, where pristine beaches and wild landscapes offer a glimpse of the coast as it existed before development arrived. A short boat ride delivers travelers to a place that feels remarkably remote.

The islands are protected as part of a national seashore, their beaches, dunes, and waters kept largely free of the development that transformed the mainland. The result is a rare stretch of Gulf coast preserved in something close to its natural state, home to wildlife and to a beauty that is increasingly hard to find.

Reaching them requires effort, a boat trip across open water, which is part of what keeps them wild. Visitors who make the journey find white-sand beaches, clear water, and a solitude that the crowded mainland beaches cannot offer. For many, that seclusion is precisely the appeal.

The islands are also vulnerable, exposed to the storms that periodically reshape them and to the longer-term pressures affecting all coastlines. Their protection is an ongoing effort. But for now, they endure as a treasure just beyond the coast, a place where a traveler can stand on an empty beach and see the Gulf much as it looked long before the casinos and the highways, wild and quiet and vast.
